Literature Text

You said, "What do you want to be?
And I want a straight answer!"
But would you love me any less
If I said, "A burlesque dancer?"

A sexy nymph with a playlist full
Of songs to move my hips to,
And miles of curving, perfumed skin
For girls to press their lips to?

Or I could be an astronaut
(My head's already in the clouds)-
Then I could float and count the stars
And leave behind the noisy crowds.

Or maybe I'll go north and join
A crew, and sail away.
They say it's dangerous, but don't worry-
I'll bring you back a fish one day.

I could buy a cabin in the woods
And live alone with my laptop,
So I could spin my stories somewhere
No one could tell me to stop.

There are so many things that I could be...
I can see your heads spinning.  Don't look so sad!
Why can't you just be proud of me,
Your own, crazy daughter, Mom and Dad?
Full title: Don't Ask Your Teenager What She Wants to Be When She Grows Up
I can't imagine why that wouldn't fit, can you?
I wrote this after watching "Everybody's Fine" with my mom.
I realize I have dumbed down these professions, and I mean no offense. I meant the outlook of the poem to be a bit childish. And I have wanted to be all of these things. I still want to. :)
